Dell X300 – Problem On Boot?

I have a Dell X300, a little old I know but it ran like a champ for a long time. My main reason for fixing is becuase I just purchased a new hard drive for it since the old one died. Go figure…

So I’ve been taking it apart to get ready to put in the new hard drive coming in 3 days – and now when I power it on, I don’t get a BIOS screen. I was able to when I set it down and took the old HD out. Now I pick it up, power it on to boot from a live USB and I get no output from the LCD? What could be causing this? I smelled something funny when I open it, but when I power on, it can still spin the old hard drive – it does power on, all the fans work. I just see no screen, no bios no nothing. Any suggestions?

unplug the usb drive and try to boot it. if you can get to bios after unplugging the usb drive, you may not have the right config for booting to usb. try using a linux live disk.
