How can i contact my DV Camcorder to an computer without an DV input?

How can i contact my Panasonic cam that has an DV input to my computer that doesn’t have any dv inputs, just USB, And i don’t have any firmware ports, so what can i do?

If you use a miniDV or Digital8 tape based digital video (DV) camcorder and want to get high quality DV format digital video into a computer, you have one way…

1) You computer needs a firewire port (not “firmware”). If you computer does not have a firewire port, hopefully it has an avaialble expansion slot so you can add a firewire port. You did not tell us anything about your computer, so there’s not much more we can do to help. USB will not work. USB-to-DV cable/converter/adapter things will not work.

The DV port on the camcorder is always 4-pin… so the other side of the cable that connects to the computer depends on the computer’s firewire port. It could be 4-pin, 6-pin or 9-pin.

For reduced quality video, you have a couple of ways:

2) Use analog video transfer. For Windows/Vista machines, an “analog/digital converter” like those form Pinnacle (Dazzle) or Roxio (among many others) will connect via USB. Expect video quality to be reduced because of the step through analog.

3) Get a “Direct to DVD” burner… then download and install a DVD ripper and rip the video using the computer’s DVD drive to a format your computer’s video editor can work with. Expect video quality to be reduced because of the step through very highly compressed VOB files.
