IBM Lenovo z60 Laptop Screen Died!?

I have an (approximately) 2 year old IBM/Lenovo z60 Thinkpad Laptop, and last week after putting the computer in sleep mode I went to use it the next day only to find it completely dead. It turned out that there was just a faulty connection with the AC charger, and after fiddling with that for a while I got the computer to run, and the battery (which is the original battery) takes a charge, but the screen barely functions (you can see desktop items only if you hold the screen at an angle and it appears mostly black).. right now I am using the laptop by running the video signal out through the projector port to my television, but this is obviously not a long-term solution because it is effectively a desktop computer now. Should I take it in for service? Is this a common problem that is easily fixed? Or am I looking at an expensive fix which would make it more worthwhile to just buy a new laptop?
